How can you keep your bike secure?
Here are some tips that can reduce the chances of your bike getting stolen:
1) Mark your bike permanently with your post code and house name or number. Your local police station can often do this for you.
2)Get the bike close to railings and if possible hook the handlebars over the rails, use proper cycle anchors or robust street furniture.
3)Always make sure that you have locked the bike to something, even when in the garage or shed. There are brackets available from DIY or cycle dealers which can be fastened to the fabric of a building.
4)Don't lock your bike to a wire fence, as this can easily be cut through with a good pair of pliers.
5)Remove the front wheel and place it between the bike and the railings, then put your lock through both wheels and the frame. Try to fill as much of the lock space as possible, reducing the amount of space to work at with tools.
Make the lock as awkward as possible to get at.
Using a D or U lock will improve the chances of keeping your bike, but there are good and bad locks on the market. Ask your local cycle dealer for advice, he may have test reports available for comparison. Also try the Sold Secure Website for details of approved products.
