So you've decided you want a mountain bike. There are lots of bikes to choose from with pricing ranges from less than one hundred pounds to several thousand pounds. So firstly decide where you want to ride and how much can you afford to spend.
Where are you going to ride? If you think you will ride on tarmac and good paths like canal tow paths then you are better to look at a hybrid or trekking bike. However if you want to do some serious off road riding then a mountain bike is the one for you.
How much to spend? Bike prices have fallen dramatically over the last few years and standard equipment levels have improved so that almost all mountain bikes now include front suspension as standard. Decent bikes are available fom approximately two hundred pounds upwards. As the price increases you will get higher spec components and the weight of the bike will generally becoming lighter as more exotic materials are used in their manufacture. The main types of bike are: hardtail (no rear suspension), cross country, full suspension cross country, freeride and downhill. If you are unsure which type to go for and looking for a bike that will do a bit of everything choose a free ride bike. If you are going to ride hard and fast off road look for the cross country type which usually have an XC in their name o model number. Downhill bikes are just as their name suggest designed for people who want to tear down steep and rough tracks at high speed. So they have more robust frames to cope with the rough terrain.
