Start at the Red Lion Inn (SD29275 86524), Lowick Bridge and head north up the A5084 toward Torver. The road winds through the countryside before joining the lake at Brown Howe. After a long straight besides the lake there is a hard slog up Sunny Bank passing Hadwins LandRover garage before it drops down to the village of Torver (2 pubs here, The Wilson Arms and The Church House Inn, if you need to wet your whistle). At Torver you reach a T-junction turn right onto the A593 and continue 2.5 miles until you enter the village of Coniston (Lots of opportunities for food and drink here).
Once in the centre of the village, pass the petrol station on your right and then the road goes right over a bridge. (Coniston has a wide range of pubs and cafes if you want to stop here for a bite or drink, including the Black Bull which brews its own beer. Other places worth a try are The Sun Hotel and the Crown Inn). Immediately after this turn right (heading alomost straight ahead) onto the B5285. Stay on this road leaving the village behind you. Here you start to pass round the top of the Lake. There is a minor road on your right just as you reach the most northerly part of the lake. Turn right onto this (heading SE) and pass by the top of the lake and start your slog uphill to How Head. Stay on this road as it now follows the eastern side of the lake on a nice long descent.
Follow this road all the way to the southern end of the lake passing through the village of Nibthwaite. Approximately 2 miles after leaving Nibthwaite the road comes to a T-junction. Turn right here go 70 yds and you will meet the cross roads outside the Red Lion where your journey began.
