North Face Trail Grizedale (10 Miles Off Road)

You can download a map of this from here.

I will not describe the route in any detail as it is well marked and easy to follow. This is a great fun ride for all riders although you do need to be a reasonable standard to really enjoy it. There are a number of narrow sections as well as boardwalks which need to be tackled with confidence. If you go very slow on these sections it is much easier to fall off and get injured so if you are not comfortable about riding these you should think twice about tackling this route. Park at the main visitor centre, where you can also hire bikes. The route starts with a fairly arduous climb and winds it way up through the forest through sections like Elephants paradise with a few simple boardwalks to get you settled in. Generally the route climbs up to its highset point round the back of Caron Crag and once you have conquered this then much of the rest of your journey is flat or a long descent. As you go round the trail there are some more techncially challenging sections and a nice feature is that you have a choice of obstacles in some places. For example you can go along the traditional boardwalk or for the experienced riders there is often an alternative 4 inch beam or log to traverse along. You should particularly enjoy the last couple of miles as you drop down a long descent on a narrow track crossing rivers and gullies with marvellous views over to your right.
