North Windermere Round (19 Miles on and off road)

North Windermere Round (19 Miles on and off road)
You could start this route at several points e.g Bowness, Windermere or Ambleside but for the purposes of the description we sill start from Windermere Railway Station Grid ref SD41375 98649. Start by heading almost due east on the A591 in the direction of Kendal. Go up over the hill and after approximately 1 mile turn left towards Heaning and Mislet. Follow this road for just over 0.5 miles when you will reach a T-Junction. Turn left, and continue climbing until you reach a Y junction. Here take the right hand fork heading NNE for approximately 0.5 miles when you turn left onto the “Dubbs Road” a RUPP. Continue your climb up this track past the reservoir until you reach the highest point on your journey where the Dubbs road meets the Garburn Pass. At this point turn left almost back on yourself (SE) and start a steep descent. Take care on this descent because after approximately 0.5 mile the track joins two other tracks but you need to turn sharp right heading NNW in the direction of Limefitt Caravan park just where the tracks join. In 0.25 mile turn sharp left (SE) dropping down into the Caravan park. Make your way through the park and out to the main road A592. Turn left. Go 200yds and turn right onto a bridleway by the Church. Follow this bridleway as it climbs up to Low fold. Ignore the track to the right and after 0.5 miles you join a tarred road. Go left to the post office and then take the path on the left heading SE. This is Robins Lane. Follow this track as it climbs and makes its way round the hill, before descending towards High Skelghyll. Continue on this track to the bottom where you should meet the A591 at Waterhead. Follow the sings to Coniston and Hawkshead. As this road leaves Ambleside it crosses a hump back bridge and in half a mile take the left turn signposted Hawkshead (B5286). Follow this road for 1.5 miles until you come to a Y junction. Take the left fork (SW) towards Low Wray Bridge and after approximately ¾ of a mile take the bridleway (left) SW down to High Wray Bay. Within a 1/3 of a mile you should come to the lake shore. Follow the shore heading SW for 3.25 miles until you reach tarmac again. After ¼ mile turn left to catch the ferry across the lake. On leaving the ferry follow the road until and then turn right as it joins the main road into Bowness. Continue into the town centre until you reach the roundabout, bear right following the signs to Windermere and back to your starting point.
